What's an appropriate word count range for a book for a precocious 8-year-old boy?

(I'm flattered. My oldest nephew is devouring books at an astonishing rate, and my sister asked if I could write "some like these, but more for boys" for him.
It's kinda sad. His current favorites are a series mainly intended for girls, about fairies, and the other boys are already teasing him about it. Home come girls can read "boys books," but not vice versa?

How would someone from Depression-Era Northeastern US refer to blue jeans? Denim pants?

I just posted a set of anthologies on Anthology Builder. They're a collection of stories from magazines that aren't active any more, but had a lot of good stories that deserve to be remembered:

I hadn't planned on making 2 books, but the sad thing is that I could probably do a third.
(I know, the JBU stories aren't in there. I'm still in denial and hoping for a miracle as long as they have issues coming out.)

Here's to SCIFICTION, LSS, Aeon, and all the rest.

The anthology "Ladies of Carpe Libris" is now available at AnthologyBuilder. It features fiction by J.K. Cheney, Melissa Mead and Jennifer Schwabach, and cover art by Z.S. Adani.

There are more ladies in CL, and we have more stories and art, so if you like this book, maybe someday we'll make Volume 2: http://www.anthologybuilder.com/view_template.php?template_id=458

Fellow CL member Z.S. Adani and I have new covers up at AnthologyBuilder. http://www.anthologybuilder.com/display_sql_covers.php

It's just over 2K. Not much, but that's 2 complete stories in just over a week, which is a lot for me. It's nice to be back in the swing.

Over 1000 words on the Selkie story, and a few new AB covers created. It's nice to be making things again, and having them come out more or less right.

Finished!

I broke out of my dry spell at last, and finished something. It's <2k, and it's downright weird, but by golly, it's a complete story!

My new WIP is set in a near-future SF Schenectady, and the MCs last names are Stewart and Proctor.

If I add somebody named Freihofer, will people want to hurt me?

(The story has a very light/silly tone, so I'm hoping this works with that.)

Vera Nazarian adds: I would also add artist credit: the cover artwork, commissioned especially for us, is called "Captain of the Guard" and the artist is Ahyicodae, and her website: http://www.ahyicodae.com/

562 words on a new story.

Well, I finally got around to clearing out the mass of rampant chives, gone-to-seed radishes and Creeping Charlie from my garden. Foolishly, I picked our first 90+ degree day to do it. I got 2 surprises.

The ugly: Blood meal, while it keeps rabbits away wonderfully, also liquefies into a putrid tarry substance, quite alarming to the gardener who's not expecting to find it on her hands.

The good: A single straggly pea plant buried in the foliage, with 3 pods of delicious peas. Also some brave baby carrots struggling up from under the greenery. I've never had luck with root crops (hence the dud radishes), but we'll see...

(3 pea pods is a harvest for me. My garden is smaller than my computer desk.)

Courtesy of several people, the first lines of my current Works In Progress:

“John Donne was a liar,” the painter muttered under his breath at his first sight of his client. - from "Bearer of Burdens"

Ten years is long enough for people to get suspicious.- from A Demon Divided (AKA "The Second Demon Book")

Helen put away the dishes and stole a glance between the kitchen curtains. - from "Fog Nights."

Katrina paused before leaving the shuttle.- from the as-yet-unnamed "sequel" to "Hirasol."

On maps, even the sepia-toned ones with “Here Be Dragons” in the margins, the land of Darkwood looks like an insignificant dot.- from "Snow, Blood and Dark Wood" (AKA "the novel I'll work on if I get discouraged about finding a home for the First Demon Book.")

I stole this post from Nancy Fulda, because I think Anthology Builder is fascinating:

"It's like a Pop Quiz -- Only better
(Anthology Builder is) officially concluding beta testing tomorrow.

In order to test the finishing touches we've put on the web site (including the much-requested shopping cart system) we're having a POP SALE today: 1/2 off all anthologies purchased before 12:00 noon EST tomorrow.

If you've been thinking about buying something on AB, you'll never get a better chance."

I've bought books from AB for myself and my family and been very pleased with them.
