I just got back from my Birthday Musical Trip to Proctors in Schenectady, NY. I'll get my one complaint out of the way-why did the soldiers in Ancient Egypt have machine guns? I assume they were symbolically linking the eras with the various modern props, but...No. No machine guns. Totally blew the sense of romance spanning the ages.
Ok, now that that's out of the way...WOOHOO! That Rocked! In every sense of the word. The leads all had mind-blowingly powerful voices. The guy who played Merab had me in tears. The villain...well, he was loud and evil. ;)Aida had spunk. Radames looked good with his shirt off. There was lots of good singing and dancing. It was Fun.
Thought-provoking momemt: My dad's comment afterward that "I don't know how people come up with stories like that," and my realization that I DO know how that's done. That particular bit of theater magic...yes, I know, at least a little.
But the music, and singing, and dancing, the lighting and sets and the myriad perfectly coordinated touches and the mass of talent and enthusiasm...how that all comes together to make the wonder called a Show is still magic.
