Well, I did it. I’m glad I did it. I don’t think I’ll do it again, though.

I signed up for NaNo because I’d grown used to thinking of myself as “someone who just doesn’t write fast enough to be a Real Writer.” Now I know that, under pressure, I can produce over 50,000 words in a month. I couldn’t have typed them. I’m just not that fast. I made it only because my wonderful husband, “Tech Support,” installed voice recognition software on my computer-and then vanished for hours while I jabbered at the microphone, popping in now and then to say things like “Open-quote do you think you could tear yourself away long enough to come to dinner comma dear question-mark close-quote.” I also carried my Alphasmart everywhere, even to a hospital waiting room, in case I had a chance to get a few words in.

But they weren’t good words. More than that-they were deliberate bad writing. I dredged up long, rambling monologues, never used one word where 10 would do, made friends with “As you know, Bob,” the Authorial Intrusion and the Lengthy Infodump. I don’t like encouraging bad habits.
The most distressing part was that I didn’t have time to THINK, to enjoy the fun bits. It was all spewing. I’d hit a point and think “Oo, I’d like to expand on that,” but there was no time. Sometimes I even forgot where I’d last left a character, or who was in a scene. And in the past week or so I’d had a terribly selfish thought: “I could be using this time to write something that I might have a chance, however remote, of selling.” I’m so greedy. I don’t feel like I wrote a novel this month, or any sort of book. I produced 50,000 words, that’s it.

I loved the camaraderie. I loved the challenge. I love the reassurance that I CAN write faster than I thought I could. And I’m saving what I wrote, because that 50,000 word pile of demon poo might have some sparkly bits in it that I could salvage someday.

Here’s to learning experiences! ;)

I finished too soon! I’m over 50,000 on NaNoWriMo, but they don’t start acknowledging winners until the 25th.

11,500 even. Stopping because of a stiff neck.

“Tech Support” may have given me a chance at finishing NaNo (and saving my wrists.) He got voice-recognition software working! There was no way I was going to make it at 10 words/minute, but now, just maybe...

(Since I was at WFC until yesterday.) 2,750 words. I posted an excerpt on the NaNo site, too.

And it hasn't even started yet!

The Alphasmart isn't holding a charge. Well, I'm signed up, so I'll still give NaNo a try, but my odds of finishing just went WAY down.

I signed up for Nano.

Confession: I don't expect to finish (especially since I'll be at WFC for the first 4 days.) I'm doing this to teach myself that it's ok to try and fall short sometimes.
